Fendi offered up many different styles for their Spring/Summer handbag collection with two opposing themes, vintage and futuristic. Karl Lagerfeld used lots of wispy, lingerie influenced fabric to cover many of the bags, but the effect came across as a bit sloppy and worn. The wood handled bags had an unusual feature of a snap on fabric cover, in various materials from linen with a flower-embroidered edge to needlepoint. Some of these wooden handled bags featured a strip of transparent Perspex, adding a futuristic element that looks awkward on an otherwise vintage style bag.
The Peek a Boo handbag is back in the usual materials like leather and snakeskin, as well as embroidery. Some of the them, also, had a Perspex element in the handle. The effect on the Peek a Boo wasn't as drastic, but it cheapened the overall look, in my opinion.
Most perplexing were the transparent Perspex clutches. Of course they were modeled empty, because it would ruin their beauty to carry anything in them. When are these designer going to realize that we use bags to carry things?
The one bag that had potential was the studded Perspex clutch. The studs added enough cover so you could actually use the bag without it looking sloppy, but then I realized there is a huge empty space with no studs where your hand should go to carry the bag. Can you imagine how silly that looks when it's setting down? What could have been a decent clutch was ruined and ultimately the worst in the collection.
Overall, I felt this collection was very disappointing. I know where I won't be shopping next Spring.
